Background of the Study

Strikes in Nigerian universities, particularly those organized by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have been a recurring issue affecting the nation’s educational system. These strikes, often triggered by disputes over funding, salaries, and working conditions, have significant economic implications for students, families, and the broader economy.

Prolonged academic disruptions result in increased costs for students, such as extended rent and additional academic fees, while universities lose revenue from tuition and other sources (Olawale & Bassey, 2024). This study analyzes the economic impact of ASUU strikes, focusing on Nigerian universities and their stakeholders.

Statement of the Problem

ASUU strikes have become a perennial issue in Nigeria, disrupting academic calendars and affecting the economic well-being of stakeholders. Despite efforts to resolve disputes, the economic costs of these strikes, including lost productivity and increased financial burdens, remain substantial.

This study investigates the economic implications of ASUU strikes, shedding light on their broader impact and suggesting measures to mitigate them.

Objectives of the Study

1. To analyze the direct and indirect economic costs of ASUU strikes.

2. To evaluate the impact of ASUU strikes on students, families, and universities.

3. To propose strategies for minimizing the economic impact of future strikes.

Research Questions

1. What are the direct and indirect economic costs of ASUU strikes?

2. How do ASUU strikes affect students, families, and universities economically?

3. What strategies can mitigate the economic impact of ASUU strikes?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: ASUU strikes have no significant economic costs.

2. H₀: ASUU strikes do not significantly affect students, families, and universities economically.

3. H₀: There are no effective strategies to mitigate the economic impact of ASUU strikes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on ASUU strikes in Nigerian universities over the last 15 years, emphasizing economic impacts. Limitations include variability in strike duration and access to comprehensive economic data.

Definitions of Terms

• ASUU: Academic Staff Union of Universities, a union of Nigerian university staff advocating for improved conditions.
